This week, Holly chats with author Stephanie Shields about writing and publishing her debut novel in 2020. They discuss:
- doing historical research
- writing a dual timeline book back to front
- self-publishing
- marketing a book with local historical interest to independent bookshops.

Stephanie Shields writes and farms in the north of England. Her first passion was poetry, but in recent years she has chosen to write short stories, flash fiction and novellas. Her debut novel The Strange Woman – a fusion of feminism, farming andthe fantastical – came out in 2020.
Her first short story The Watershed appeared in the Jane Austen Bicentenary Collection: Dancing with Mr Darcy (Honno 2009) – selected by Sarah Waters. Her short fiction and poems have been anthologised, appeared in magazines, and broadcast on radio.
She self-published Swan Landings, her short story collection, in 2017.
Stephanie performs her work locally – the Washburn Valley where she farms, and at festivals: in Leeds, the Bradford Literature Festival, the Ilkley Literature Festival and on local radio – Chapel FM and Bradford Community Broadcasting. In 2018, she performed selections from Swan Landings at the Ripon International Festival.
